CORRECTED VERSION: Which one wins the energy/lifestyle battle?

I'll try to keep this simple:

Today, we are choking on the very oil and gas we use as energy. Fossil fuels are destroying the planet's environment and global warming is somehting n o reasonable person can deny. Oil empowers the middle east to hold the world hostage in its use of oil, as well as empowering religous fanatcis to exercise terrorism. As this fossil fuel runs out, its costs go up and up. The very quality of our lives and the consumer culture that we have built are fully dependent on the availability of reasonably priced oil. Without it, the house of cards could collapse.

There are other more environmentally friendly forms of energy out there, renewable and likely to be more cost effective. But research has to be done to access and improve these; and the US seems an unlikely candidate to do the research necessary to accomplish this goal, no matter what was mentioned about an oil-addicted nation in the State of the Union speech.

So here's my question, attached to a poll:

Will the US (world) find another source of energy, one that is environmentally friendly, economical, renewable) in time to replace fosil fuels before oil and gas seriously run out

-or-

Will our life styles, our economies, the quality of our lives be severely compromised before a new form of energy can come on the scene?
