Pedestrianization

I think the USA are lagging behind Europe in downtown pedestrianization which is a shme as I'm sure that would do a lot to revitalize city centers. Which cities in America have, in your opinion, done best in that area? What cities have the most extensive pedestrianized systems? What are the prospects in your city on that subject?>
